Planet Ring is one of the most unique and interesting games on the Dreamcast. Described as a "Online Theme Park", Planet Ring was a collection of mini-games known as attractions that could be played online with players all throughout Europe. An online console game in 2000 was unique enough already but Planet Ring took this a step further by including voice chat; a first on Sega's little gray box outside of Japan. Unlike Alien Front Online which claimed to have "real-time voice chat", this was TRUE real-time voice chat and not just recorded voice clips.

Planet Ring was truly a showcase for what the Dreamcast could do when it came to online gaming. It had basically everything you'd expect in a modern online game: up to 8-p...

Shuouma has released the source code for all the servers he's coded to date; this includes the server software for Planet Ring, ChuChu Rocket!, PBA Tour Bowling 2001, Starlancer, The Next Tetris, and Maximum Pool (master server). This software has been released as open source under the MIT license and can be freely used, copied, modified, or distributed. This is a huge step in making sure all the games revived so far will be online for as long as the internet still exists. Long live Dreamcast!

All the source code can be found on the new Server Software page in addition to any other Dreamcast server software and/or source code that has been released to date.

This is due in large part to a man known as Jonas Karlsson, better known as Shuouma around most parts of the internet. Some may call him a magician but I think that may be selling him short. Shuouma is responsible for reviving four online games in just the last year; these games include ChuChu Rocket!, The Next Tetris, PBA Tour Bowling 2001, and Worms World Party. Not only that but he played a huge part in helping Petter3k with Alien Front Online and released improved and more stable servers for Planet Ring and Starlancer. I think it's safe to say that Dreamcast fans owe this man a huge thanks!

So who is Jonas Karlss...

Jonas Karlsson has released a new and improved server for Planet Ring! If you've ever played Planet Ring on the original private server then you'll know how buggy and unstable it can be. Jonas' version is much more stable and adds some new features that were not yet implemented into the 2013 server such as working leaderboards and 8-player support in Soar. The leaderboards are viewable in-game as well as right here on Dreamcast Live. The server software is still in a beta stage but Jonas' is actively monitoring it in order to spot and fix bugs. In the near future, Jonas also plans on partnering with Luke Benstead to implement software into DreamPi that will fix the in-game voice chat. Between this and the impending alien invasion, you'd be...
